All-Outdoor Weddings

For those embracing the beauty of an al fresco celebration, here’s our most common flow:

• Ceremony: Fountain-side of the Swan House (note: this area cannot be tented)
• Cocktail Hour: Boxwood Garden, offering a lush, intimate setting 
• Reception: Column-side of the Swan House, ensuring an elegant transition into the evening

Keep in mind, all outdoor furniture must be rented, and fountain-side rentals must be sourced from preferred vendors. Additionally, due to unpredictable Atlanta weather, nearly 50% of our outdoor events ultimately move indoors, making a contingency plan essential.

Indoor-Outdoor Weddings

For a blend of garden romance and refined interiors:

• Ceremony: Fountain-side or column-side of the Swan House
• Cocktail Hour: Boxwood Garden or column-side of the Swan House (if not used for the ceremony)
• Reception: Grand Ballroom, offering a sophisticated indoor option with climate control

Alternative cocktail hour locations include the outdoor steps near Oulgita’s Garden or inside the museum, ideal for guests to explore and mingle.

The Contingency Plan

Even the most meticulously planned weddings should include a Plan B — especially when outdoor elements are in play. Here are some of our Plan B recommendations for an Atlanta History Center wedding:

• Secure drapery for the Atrium in advance, creating an elegant indoor alternative should weather require a shift.
• Any rental order modifications should be made at least 48 hours before the event to minimize cost impact.
• While sparklers are not permitted, alternative send-off options such as cold sparks or candle-lit farewells can create an equally enchanting departure.

The Essentials: Lighting, Rentals and Logistics

A venue as grand as the Atlanta History Center deserves an equally thoughtful logistics plan. Here are some considerations specifically for celebrations at the Swan House:

• Lighting: We recommend bistro string lights, soft uplighting on the Swan House, and ambient lighting around the perimeter. Depending on the time of year, you may also need to consider lighting the Boxwood Garden as well.
• Generators and Portable Restrooms: Outdoor receptions require additional power sources and restroom accommodations. The historic home’s plumbing cannot accommodate guests, so securing portable luxury restrooms is a must.
• Seasonal Comfort: Depending on the time of year, outdoor heaters or cooling fans may be necessary to maintain guest comfort.

Catering Considerations

The magic of a luxury wedding extends to the culinary experience. When planning your reception at the Atlanta History Center:

• A 20×20 catering tent with lighting is typically required, though size may vary based on service style.
• Plated meals can be challenging for large guest counts due to limited prep areas — buffet or station-style dining may provide more seamless service.
• Additional catering rentals (i.e. warming ovens, handwashing stations, fryers, etc.) may be necessary depending on your selected menu.
